BALLARD DNA PROJECT
1165 f.l. Georgius Bollard was a witness at Ten Duinen Abbey, Koksijde, Belgium, (Cistercian Order), to a Charter of Philip Count of Flanders. The monastery developed extensive landholdings on which the lay brothers reared sheep, producing wool for the cloth trade. A dependent house was established at Eastchurch, in Kent, to export wool from England, but was later sold to Boxley Abbey, Sandling, near Maidstone in Kent (Cistercian Order), the abbey was founded in around 1146 by William of Ypres, leader of King Stephen of England's Flemish mercenaries, and populated by monks from Clairvaux Abbey in Ville-sous-la-Ferté, France.
